Science

Science helps us navigate our ever-changing world. Grounded in objective, tangible evidence, it enables us to investigate and understand life, develop new technologies, and make informed decisions to solve local and global problems. Recognising the pivotal role of research in building that knowledge, MSP supports scientific research, with a special focus on the biosciences. We seek to fund standout research that addresses persistent health and development challenges. Through international and India-based fellowships, chairs and institution building, we are excited to back high risk and unconventional science with potential to make transformative global impact.

MSP Philanthropic Contribution to Impact Science (2023): US$30 Million
University of Glasgow, SCOTLAND ARC (Mazumdar Shaw Advanced Research Centre)

“Welcome to Mazumdar Shaw.
May the name resound and be it
renowned, for energy, sparking
moments of discovery, transforming
lives and changing the world.”

Excerpt from ‘Arc’ — a poem by UofG poet-in-residence
Tawona Sithole, performed at the opening of the centre

ARC is a first-of-its-kind collaborative research, innovation and discovery centre at the University of Glasgow. MSP made a gift to the university (the largest ever received) to fund the building and to create a Professorial Chair.

MSP’s gift towards building ARC

“MSP enables us to significantly accelerate our research efforts through hiring new team members and performing more sophisticated experiments and analyses. It is with their support that we hope to transform the landscape of kidney cancer care.”

Ritesh Kotecha, MD, Genitourinary Oncology and Cellular Therapy

Established in 2022, the Mazumdar Shaw Translational Research  Initiative has opened up exciting opportunities across the entire spectrum of kidney cancer research and care. It has significantly boosted research programmes, enabling multidisciplinary teams of highly specialised physicians and scientists to make impressive strides towards innovative treatments in renal oncology.

Research Focus

“We have a strong professional conversation on science in India — but we do not yet have a cultural one. Science Gallery Bengaluru creates a two-way bridge between research and the public in order to shape better conversations on science, and to shape better research with input from society.”

Jahnavi Phalkey, Founding Director, SGB

Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB) is Asia’s first and India’s only member of Science Gallery International. Its mandate is to bring ‘science back into culture’ through exhibitions, mentorship programmes, and a pioneering public lab complex. MSP founder, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, has been personally involved in envisioning SGB and mentoring its founding team. MSP has co-funded construction of the SGB building.

“Precision healthcare, non-invasive imaging methods and molecular imaging probes are essential to longitudinally monitor disease progress or therapy response.
This fund has been instrumental in developing new chemistries and imaging methods for cancer-specific precision diagnostics and theranostics.”

Dr Sanhita Sinharay, Assistant Professor, Centre for BioSystems Science and Engineering, IISc

MSP has endowed a Chair at India’s premier destination for advanced scientific research, renowned for its academic freedom, excellence in education and innovative, interdisciplinary initiatives. The fund supports bright, young faculty members who undertake cutting edge research in bioengineering and related fields.
