Science Gallery Bengaluru, India
Establishment Patron
Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB) is Asia’s first and India’s only member of Science Gallery International, a one-of-a-kind, university-linked network in the world. An independent institution established by the Government of Karnataka in academic partnership with Indian Institute of Science, National Centre for Biological Sciences, and Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, SGB is a not-for-profit public institution for research-based engagement in the human, natural and social sciences, engineering and the arts. SGB works to bring ‘science back into culture’ through ever-changing exhibitions, mentorship programmes, and a pioneering public lab complex. It has sister galleries in Atlanta, Berlin, Dublin, London, Melbourne, Monterrey and Rotterdam.
MSP’s gift, a joint-establishment grant that matches that of the Karnataka government, is being used to fund the construction of the building and subsequent operational costs. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is also the first Chairperson of the Board of Directors, and has been instrumental in setting up the Gallery, having brought the project to Bengaluru, in her capacity as the Irish Consul General in the city.
We have a strong professional conversation on science in India — but we do not yet have a cultural one. Science Gallery Bengaluru creates a two-way bridge between research and the public in order to shape better conversations on science, and to shape better research with input from society. We want to create the model of a public space for knowledge for the twenty-first century.”
